Cheryl's Shanghai
Shanghai street scene
OK. I’ll admit it. Shanghai is not my favorite city in China. Not by a long shot. There’s too many people. Too much traffic — traffic that goes way too fast. But that doesn’t mean I’ll write it off as a tourist destination. It does have many interesting things to see and do.
It’s got some of the most innovative architecture I’ve ever seen. A cruise on the Huangpu River at night is a good, relaxing way to see this. The Shanghai Museum is fantastic
I’ve been to Shanghai three times: in 1984, as a journalist on tour, in 1999 as a tour director, and in 2008 as a tourist visiting friends who lived there. Each time I’ve found something to like about the city, but it’s just not Beijing. I think a main reason why I don’t really like Shanghai is the food. It slips through chopsticks so easily. Plus, it’s sea-food based. I have a life-threatening allergy to seafood which means ordering meals turns into work, not fun.

Shanghai sites
Shopping mall in Shanghai
- The Shanghai Museum is a fascinating place, filled with treasures from all around China.
- Tongli is a water town about an hour’s bus ride from Shanghai. Jiaoding is another water town that isn’t as geared up for tourists as Tongli, but still makes for a pleasant day trip, giving a more realistic look at how the Chinese live.
- The Shanghai motorcycle market is the place to go for parts and accessories.
- Yixing, about a three-hour drive from Shanghai, is known for its pottery, especially the teapots. They’re made from a special clay which absorbs the flavor of the tea.
- The Bund is famous throughout the world. Take a stroll along the Huangpu River from here.
- Shanghai Botanical Garden is the largest municipal botanical garden in China.
