Welcome to Cheryl's China

China is an intriguing country that has fascinated me since my first trip back in 1984 on a two-week tour for American journalists. I was so fascinated by this mysterious, exotic country, that 10 years later I leaped at the chance to live in Beijing for a year while working as a copy editor for China Daily, an English language newspaper. I enjoyed it so much, I returned for another year. Since then I have made numerous trips (somewhere around 15) to the Middle Kingdom.
In the pages of this website, you’ll be treated to some of my favorite things, places I’ve been to and keep returning to over and over. You’ll also learn some tips (things I learned the hard way!) to make your trip to China more enjoyable.
Many people are intimidated by traveling in China, mainly because of the language barrier, so they take package tours. Tours are nice, but they won’t take you to the “real” China, the China that you’ll see if you travel independently. Tours do make it easier for you, but traveling on your own makes it more fun. If you do opt for a tour (and I sometimes do day tours), make sure to break away and explore China on your own. You won’t regret it!
